SRC leader’s online post condemned

In his post, Mthethwa said ‘assassinations are a tool that can be used to clean the movement’

UMFOLOZI TVET College Student Representative Council (SRC) President at the eSikhaleni campus, Bonga Siyanda Mthethwa, is under fire following his Facebook post which went viral last week.

In his post, Mthethwa said ‘assassinations are a tool that can be used to clean the movement’.

Many Zululanders believe the comment was dangerous and irresponsible.

Mthethwa is a member of the ANC South African Students Congress (SASCO) movement.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the King Cetshwayo District has strongly condemned the post.

‘While this is an internal ANC battle, we find it very dangerous and irresponsible for a young leader to make such comments,’ said the DA’s statement by Provincial Communications Manager, Philisiwe Sefatsa.

According to the DA, Mthethwa’s statement comes down to hate speech which can incite violence.

‘In a province with a history of violence, where 11 lives have been lost owing to political killings leading up to the local government elections last year, it is disturbing that a student leader can publicly utter such inflammatory statements.’

‘This post, which further says #WeloveANC, is an indication of a bigger problem within the ANC where killing people has been normalised. It is more worrying when young people who are seen as future leaders are at the centre of perpetuating violence,’ said the statement.

‘As a young leader, Mthethwa has shown that the rot that we see at the top of irresponsible leadership is trickling down fast to future leaders.’

DA uThungulu DASO Branch Chairperson, Ayanda Goqo, told the Zululand Observer a letter has been sent to the college’s principal.

‘We are waiting for a response on this matter. We would also be reporting the matter to the police immediately so that the law can take its course.’
