Community calls for road safety intervention

Neighbourhood forum petitions for road safety measures to be implemented after fatal car crash

RESIDENTS of Cinnamon Crescent and surrounding streets in Brackenham have petitioned the uMhlathuze Municipality to address road safety in the street after Sunday’s accident in which a young man lost his life.

Chairperson of the CibCin Neighbours Forum, Vernon Pillay, said it was deep sadness that this matter is being discussed as Edwin Moodley (29) was laid to rest following the fatal car crash.

Pillay said residents were left devastated and shocked by the tragedy and the forum wanted to address this matter urgently so no more accidents occur on that road.

‘There have been a number of accidents on this road and factors such as tree roots lifting the tar on Cinnamon Crescent street as well as a section of the perimeter precast wall of Richards Bay Secondary obscuring vehicles coming around the bend, need to be attended to.

‘Residents have raised concerns of road safety in the past, but we do not want to waste any more time.

‘Vehicles often try to avoid the protrusions in the road which is still a major hazard.

‘Two years ago poles were erected where calming measures were to be installed, but it never materialised. We would like the municipality to install a few speed humps, especially near the four intersection streets,’ said Pillay.
