Poor track record for uMhlathuze city buildings
Yet another half-finished building eyesore in city
THE aborted change room facility intended to serve the high-class athletics track at the uMhlathuze Stadium bears testimony to yet another expensive building project failure in the city.
Work on the half-built ablution block ground to a halt late last year, with the contractor leaving the rubble-filled site uncleared.
Ironically, the eyesore is located directly opposite the equally dismal uThungulu Arts and Culture Centre, another facility that has not opened its doors more than five years after it was built on shaky foundations.
Tax-and ratepayers’ money by the tens of millions also appear to have been wasted on a combination of repeat tendering, inferior workmanship, poor building standards, incompetent contract management and bankruptcy at – among others – the eSikhaleni Fire Station, Port Control (including viewing platform) and Meerensee Lighthouse projects.

In the case of the latter, which is on the brink of tumbling into the ocean as a result of dune slumping, it is understood the Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed new lighthouse has lapsed after a long period of inactivity.
Added to the inevitable and sizable price escalations, residents have been denied long-awaited access and services.
The Department of Sport and Recreation referred the Zululand Observer to the City of uMhlathuze with regard to the unfinished sportsfield ablution block and a response was awaited at the time of going to press.
