Youth step out against women and child abuse

Zululand youth stand against women and children abuse

‘ENOUGH is enough!’

This was the strong message carried out when the youth united to fight against women and children abuse in KwaDlangezwa on Saturday morning.

Following the spate of violent attacks against women across the country, including the abduction of a female student and two brutal murders of young mothers in eShowe and Mtubatuba, the peaceful march was to create awareness against the crime wave, which has now recently hit home.

Organised by the uMhlathuze Youth Council, the walk started at the University of Zululand and moved to KwaDlangezwa Community Hall, where different speakers addressed the crowd.

‘We are here to plead to men to bring back our dignity and be protectors of our women and children,’ said uMhlathuze Youth Council chairperson, Siphelele Wiwi Gumede.

‘We need to engage with each other as young men, and find a way to restore what we have lost. Now our women are scared of us, they run away from us and fear to be close to us – this goes against everything and God’s creation. We as men must be in the front row against this terrible practice,’ he said.

With the recent abduction of a female Unizulu student days after graduation, the community pleaded for those with information to come forward.

‘We pray for all this to come to an end, and we hope God will protect our children and mothers and also comfort those who have lost loved ones,’ said Rev JM Sibiya.

Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson Capt Sibusiso Guma warned residents not to walk alone especially after dark and asked them to work with the police to ensure people’s safety.

‘As the police, we can’t work by ourselves. We need communities to be involved and also report suspicious events, whether it be strange cars driving around or suspicious movements of unknown people. Working together is what will make us conquer this scourge,’ said Guma.
