The prince of the homeless

The Friday Sandwich Challenge feeds the hungry in Richards Bay and surrounding areas

RICHARDS Bay resident Prince Majola does not loaf around on a Friday.

Instead, he ventures into the city streets handing out sandwiches to the homeless.

His initiative, the Friday Sandwich Challenge, was inspired by the fact that Prince himself spent most of his life going to sleep hungry.

‘I decided I will make something better of myself,’ he said.

‘Today, I aim to help anyone in the street who looks like they need nutrition.

‘The goal is to instill a culture in Zululand where community members give at least one sandwich on a Friday, followed by a hashtag #FridaySandwichChallenge on Twitter to start a trend.

‘This is not about encouraging people to stay in the streets, but to lift their spirits.

‘This past Friday, I had an emotional moment when I approached a man searching for food in a dustbin and handed him a sandwich.

‘He cried, saying today he thanked God because one of His sons brought him some bread.’

Prince thanked Chief Martin Mbuyazi and his mentor Moses Thokwane for their continued support.
