Smash-and-grab crime booms in Richards Bay

Careless motorists open door for theft

RICHARDS Bay SAPS has raised the alarm to alert motorists and business owners of frequent theft out of motor vehicles and trucks in the city.

This after yet another car, parked outside a house on Jacaranda street in Arboretum Extension, was broken into in the early hours of Monday.

Most stolen items recorded are laptops, cameras, wallets, cellphones and GPSs.

But thieves are not only taking their sticky fingers to the suburbs.

According to Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira, the industrial zones are worst hit by the crime trend.

‘The highest number of thefts are reported in Alton.

‘These are mostly stealing of diesel and removing wheels off trucks.

‘We urge motorists and business owners not to park vehicles in dark or remote areas.

‘Never leave valuable items visible in a car and always double check that the vehicle is locked by trying the door handle.

‘Car jammers are out and about using jamming devices that block the signal of locking remotes.’
