Nationwide Home Affairs strike could shut down Zululand offices

People who may need to make use of Home Affairs services next week are urged to make alternative arrangements

ZULULANDERS planning on visiting their local Home Affairs office next week are urged to make alternative arrangements following today’s (Monday) announcement of a nationwide strike.

According to a statement issued by Department of Home Affairs’ (DoH) King Cetshwayo District Manager for Operations, Sikhosiphi Dlamini, the strike is set to last for the duration of next week, starting on Monday until Friday.

‘We are not in a position to indicate at this stage if our offices will be closed during part of or the whole duration of the strike period,’ said Dlamini.

‘We will monitor the situation and asses the situation at any given point in time.’

Dlamini also said that, while the department respects the rights of workers to strike, the action would negatively impact on the numerous essential services offered by the department.

He said the most affected people would be those needing to register deaths or to collect travel documentation.

Representatives of DoH employees served the department with a notice of a strike after the conciliation process by the Constitutional Court deadlocked earlier this month.

The conciliation process involved working on Saturdays.

‘It needs to be stated that the decision to open Home Affairs offices on Saturdays was a cabinet decision aimed at providing members of the public who work during the week, as well as school learners, an opportunity to access our services,’ said Dlamini.

The Zululand Observer will monitor the situation and inform our readers should any changes occur.

In case of emergency, members of the public can contact Sikhosiphi Dlamini on 082 8069247.
