Sisters' rape nightmare ends with heavy court sentence

AN Esikhaleni man has been sentenced to 43 years in prison for rape.

Dumisani Sibiya(33) was sentenced in the Esikhaleni Regional Court for robbing and raping two sisters at gunpoint on New Year’s Eve last year.

The sisters were accosted while walking to their friend’s house in Madaka reserve.

‘He robbed them of their valuables and raped both of them at gunpoint. One of the sisters managed to escape and alerted the police, the accused fled to the bushes,’ said Lt Col Thulani Zwane.

A case of rape and robbery was opened at Esikhaleni police station and was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for
investigation.

‘The accused was arrested on the same day of the incident and found with the firearm in his possession.

‘He was kept behind bars throughout the trial.

‘He was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for two counts of rape, 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery and eight years imprisonment for possession of a firearm,’ Zwane said.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the Empangeni FCS members for bringing hope to sexual abuse victims.

‘The swift response by the police in arresting the accused is highly commended and it proved to the community that police are always there, to serve and protect the citizens of this country at all times,’ he said.
