Empangeni hockey star no stranger to the ‘big league’

The 21-year-old earlier this year represented SA Country Districts women's B side in Rustenburg

VERSATILE Mari-Lee Visser has racked up a number of impressive hockey achievements this year on the astroturf, which includes captaining the KZN Coastal Districts women’s team that will play in the SA Country Districts tournament in Paarl from 9 to 15 July.

The 21-year-old who matriculated at Empangeni High School in 2014, earlier this year represented the SA Country Districts women’s B side at the inter-provincial tournament in Rustenburg, and was also the Zululand A team vice captain competing in the KZNCD tournament in Pietermaritzburg three weeks ago where she received the Most Promising Player of the Tournament award.

She is still awaiting the outcome of her efforts at the recent KZN U21 trials in Durban.

Visser, who is completing her third year sports science studies at the University of Zululand, is no stranger to the ‘big stage’ when it comes to hockey.

She captained her school’s first team in 2014, received the EHS Hockey Player of the Year award, represented the KZN Country District squad and was part of the team that won the Saints and Spar girls hockey tournaments in matric.

Mari-Lee followed this up in 2015 by making the senior Zululand, KZNCD and SACD sides.

On top of studying and playing hockey at all levels, she also works as a student teacher at Felixton College three times a week.
