Protesters demand permanent jobs at Richards Bay Port

Protesters held a peaceful picket along West Central Arterial in Richards Bay from 5am on Monday morning

CALLING for an end to labour brokers and demanding to be employed directly by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), protesters held a peaceful picket along West Central Arterial in Richards Bay from 5am on Monday morning.

Hundreds of axed workers from different companies operating at the port gathered to demonstrate, saying they are frustrated as they are being exploited and their grievances are not taken seriously.

They demand permanent employment by the port. There were no police at the scene. Speaking on behalf of the protesters, King Cetshwayo Regional League Economic Freedom Fighter Coordinator, Wiseman Ndlovu, said it is not just axed workers from materials handling company Radds, but also former employees of other companies who have joined the peaceful protest to have the matter resolved.

‘The people gathered here today to support the abolishment of corruption and labour brokers. We are demonstrating peacefully, calling for TPT management to come and listen to the concerns of the workers.

‘These are all responsible citizens of society who have families and children to support, but are now without jobs. ‘This is not personal, but we want justice for all these workers,’ said Ndlovu.

The protesters are expected to gather every day from 5am to 6pm until the matter is resolved.
