WATCH: Recirculating video of shocking escalator incident has parents reeling

A video of a shocking escalator incident that happened in China in 2015 has parents reeling and has cast the spotlight on child safety at shopping centres

DISTURBING CCTV footage showing a two-year-old boy plummeting two floors to the ground from an escalator handrail has viewers questioning security measures at SA’s shopping centres.

The incident took place two years ago at a mall in Dongguan in southern China.

The toddler is seen grabbing hold of the handrail, pulling himself up and hanging on briefly before plunging to the floor of the centre below.

According to reports, he miraculously survived.

One community member, Themba Sibisi said preventative measures should be taken.

‘I have spoken to management at the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre about this accident hoping that they could find a pro-active solution to the threat.

‘I’m sure engineers could implement something tangible and safety-friendly for everyone, especially children both nationally and across the globe, to prevent this incident from re-occurring.

‘What happened to that poor boy is waiting to happen to another innocent child!’

The Boardwalk’s General Manager Riana Mathee said their security levels are ‘up to standard with the law’.

‘We have never had any accidents at our escalators or heard of cases in which children were hurt.

‘But we do urge all parents to always keep an eye on their kids while shopping.’
