Approximately 15km of illegal gill nets were also removed from the dam and confiscated

ONGOING operations against fish poaching on the Pongalopoort Dam at Jozini has once again revealed the scale of the problem, with poachers now even using outboard motors on their craft.

During the last four operations carried out by the Operational Response Services’ police divers from Richards Bay, 21 home-made boats, many with outboard motors, have been confiscated and several arrests made.

Approximately 15km of illegal gill nets were also removed from the dam and confiscated.

Fish found in the poachers’ possession included Tiger Fish and Tilapia.

Boats of all shapes and sizes were siezed

These illegal activities are decimating the marine life in the dam, which is at present only 40 percent of its full carrying capacity.
