AFTER being at below 20% of its capacity in January following four years of drought, Lake Mzingazi is reported to be above the 100% mark following the weekend deluge.
But there is still a long way to go before abstraction from Richards Bay’s fresh water source can resume.
In February, the level was reported to be 1,72msl (metres above sea level), and authorities said abstraction would only be considered when it rose to above 2msl, owing to salt infiltration during the low water period.
The lake has now risen to 3.03msl but the lake water will remain unused until repairs and refurbishment of equipment is completed.
This includes the replacement of a 45-year-old steel pipe on the abstraction line.
