eSikhaleni Fire Station is making steady progress

With the tender first having been awarded in March 2014, two contractors had their contracts terminated, leading to combined losses of around R10-million

AFTER long and expensive delays, steady progress is being made on the construction of the eSikhaleni Fire Station.

With the tender first having been awarded in March 2014, two contractors had their contracts terminated, leading to combined losses of around R10-million.

But the city now has the situation firmly under control.

‘The Community Services Portfolio Committee, which oversees all projects under the Community Development Department, recently visited the site to get a practical feel on the project and to physically inspect the progress,’ said Communications Manager Mdu Ncalane.

‘Council and Exco took it upon themselves to ensure that the project is completed, as eSikhaleni, the largest township in the city, does not have an emergency and fire rescue facility.

‘The city contracted MET Builder from January this year to work on the project with stringent time frames of completing the project within seven months,’ said Ncalane.

‘Currently, the project is around 60% complete.

‘Local labour was also sourced and the project steering committee meetings are held regularly to monitor progress and mitigate any challenges.’

City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo said: ‘We are happy with the progress thus far and we are confident that the long awaited eSikhaleni Fire Station will be completed by the end of August this year.

‘We have discussed all the challenges that at some point brought the project to a complete halt and we are closely monitoring the progress.’
