NO matter how frustrated people are, a call to abstain from voting is out of order.
This was the reaction to a community member’s statement by City of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Silondile Mkhize at the city’s 2017/18 public participation budget event held at the Ngwelezana sports ground last week.
Mkhize’s comment was a direct response to a community member from ward 25, who declared she was not going to vote again since no development has taken place in her community.
The community member, one of the Community Works Programme (CWP) workers, told a packed audience about how poorly they were being paid and that she was frustrated at not getting a RDP house.
‘The call to abstain from voting is out of order. We are where we are today as a country because of that constitutional right to vote.
‘Even the struggle for liberation revolved around that right to vote. Many people laid down their lives, others were imprisoned and some were in exile, demanding that all of us must have that right to vote.
‘We note your concerns and we will attend to it, but at least you still have a job from the same government you claim have done nothing for you,’ said Mkhize.
