Double robbery hit Veldenvlei household

Elderly women shaken up after the ordeal

FOR the second time in a week, a household in Veldenvlei has been the scene of an armed robbery, once again leaving the occupants traumatised and angry.

The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at about 2.30pm at an address in Gerranium Place.

Two elderly women, one 92 years old, were sitting in the flat on the property, the front door locked and the keys hanging from the lock on the inside of the door.

The homeowner, who was inside the property’s main house, said his grandmother’s screams alerted him.

‘Running from my house’s back door towards the flat’s front door, I encountered two male suspects in the process of fleeing,’ he said.

‘One of the suspects pointed a firearm at me, so I immediately dropped to the ground.

‘When I looked up, they had jumped over the rear wall of the property into the greenbelt.’

After cutting the wire on the flat’s front door and opening it from the inside, the suspects approached the homeowner’s father, who had been asleep in the bedroom.

They stole a .22 firearm from his bedside drawer before moving on to the two women in the other bedroom.

One woman, who had been talking on her cell phone, was slapped on the side of her face, the cell phone dropping to the floor, while one suspect held a knife at the other woman’s throat.

The suspects stole two cell phones, the .22 firearm and were seemingly in the process of stealing the TV when the alarm was raised and they had to flee.

Arborvlei CPF and Richards Bay SAPS were quick to arrive on the scene and searched the greenbelt area around the house, to no avail.

A case of armed robbery was opened but, at the time of going to print, no arrests had yet been made.

Suspects broke into the same house in the early hours of last Wednesday, stealing two laptops, a hard drive and an embroidery machine.

The homeowner said that, over the past four years they have lost about R150 000 worth of items in numerous robberies.
