Bay Primary School a slice above the rest

The school is the first one in Zululand to have won this Bakers Bread competition

BAY Primary School was on Wednesday awarded with a substantial cash prize after showing other primary schools in KZN what it means to stand together and take the task at hand seriously.

For the past two months the school has participated in a Bakers Bread competition, which involved each child collecting as many bread packets as possible during the competition period.

‘This is a brand awareness campaign, as we aim to get Bakers Bread into every community and make it the bread of choice,’ said Bakers Empangeni Depot Manager, Irshik Bhartu.

Open strictly to primary schools, each school applies to participate in the competition and the company makes the final selection.

This competition period saw eight KZN primary schools participating, with Bay Primary the only one in Zululand.

At commencement of the competition, each school is given a name board by Bakers Bread and each learner, school worker and teacher is given a loaf of bread.

At the conclusion of the competition, each learner, school worker and teacher is given another loaf to take home.

Based on the number of learners at the school and an approximate calculation of the number of loaves each learner’s household would consume in a week, the schools are given a target for the competition.

With a total of 800 learners at the school, Bay Primary School collected almost 12 000 Bakers Bread packets, for which the school won a cash prize of R10 000 and a R2 000 stationery voucher.

Before being presented with the cheque, there were a few fun games for the learners to enjoy, including ‘spin the wheel’, and some smaller prizes to be won.
