UPDATE: Zululanders open their hearts for fire victims

Zululanders show a true spirit of ubuntu

KINDHEARTED Zululanders have rallied to support an eSikhaleni family who lost all their belongings in a house fire three weeks ago.

Since the Zululand Observer published the article about the tragic incident which left the Jele family of seven destitute, compassionate residents have opened their hearts to help them rebuild their lives.

On Tuesday, after shedding tears of agony, the family saw a glimpse of light at the end of a dark tunnel, when neighbours donated bags of clothes, blankets and food items.

This was followed by a flood of phone calls from caring residents who offered to lend support.

These kind souls included church members from various congregations, business owners and the general public.

‘God is always there and we can testify to that. Our neighbours, even strangers, are contributing for us to rebuild our home and we can’t thank the Lord enough,’ said grandmother Lindeni Jele.

Lindeni, her three daughters and three young grandchildren miraculously escaped the flames which destroyed all their belongings.

They watched their home at Reserve 18 reduced to ashes after an unexplained blaze started at the main bedroom’s window.

The fire destroyed their furniture, documents, bank cards and government grant access cards.

Following the incident, they found temporary shelter with a neighbour, however they have to move out in two weeks.

‘We don’t know where we will go, but we pray for a miracle,’ said the emotional Lindeni.

‘They have been so kind to us by offering their home, but since they have already sold the house and I am afraid in two weeks we might be living on the streets.’

Lindeni lives with her three daughters who are 16, 18 and 21 years old. She also has to take care of her three young grandchildren, who also need to attend school.

Last week residents and uMhlathuze Municipality representatives provided the family with food parcels and mattresses as part of a community project.
