Busy Easter expected in Zululand

St Lucia guest houses are reporting full occupancy, and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park's accommodations are virtually fully booked

THE Easter weekend is upon us and it seems this year, like every other, will see full and busy tourism parks and establishments, with our region’s many activities high on everyone’s holiday agendas.

St Lucia town is set to be abuzz with tourists, both local and international, with bed&breakfasts, guest houses and self-catering accommodation establishments reporting full occupancy for the Easter weekend and beyond.

Estuary boat cruises are reportedly 50% fully booked, with walk-ins expected to boost these numbers.

‘The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is enjoying a busy buzz in its perennially popular Easter school holiday season, with most Park accommodation establishments virtually full,’ said Marketing Manager Lindy Duffield.

There are many cycling and walking trails throughout the public areas of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and St Lucia town

‘A few camping facilities are available over Easter at Maphelane, Cape Vidal and Sodwana Bay, as well as False Bay – now reopened for camping after a long hiatus during drought years.’

After extensive revamping of roads and facilities throughout the Park, all except the Eastern Shores’ kuMfazana Hide are open.

The 18km Grassland Loop is ever popular, where the eMfabeni Swamp wetlands and resident wildlife are flourishing.

Visitor limits apply at Cape Vidal, Western Shores and Sodwana Bay, and gates are cash-only.

No alcohol is allowed into public areas of the Park, and swimming in rivers, lakes and St Lucia Estuary is strictly forbidden, as is feeding of the animals.

Swimming in the sea is at visitors’ risk but is not advised at St Lucia beaches owing to strong currents.

Visitors to all parts of the Park are asked to observe all rules and to report any snares, animal injuries or human misbehaviour to the emergency line: 082 7977944.
