Mission to eradicate mud constructed schools

KZN Education MEC vows to eradicate mud schools

THE KZN Education Department is making strides to reduce mud constructed schools in the province, with Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana stepping up a gear to deal with infrastructure development in rural schools.

On Friday Dlungwana, assisted by the Zululand District Municipality and department head office officials responsible for infrastructure, visited three Pongola schools to identify their infrastructural needs.

Buhlebuzile Primary, Dingukwazi and Myekeni High schools were found to be in dire need of classrooms.

‘It is important we visit schools in remote areas to see for ourselves what their needs are.

‘Our visit to Pongola made it clear many schools are still in need of infrastructure. It is for this reason we will continue checking on them in all corners of the province with the aim of identifying their requirements, so that ultimately all our schools are at the same level with well-resourced ones in the country,’ Dlungwana stressed.

One of the challenges identified was overcrowding and a decision was taken to provide schools with mobile classrooms.

‘In the next few days these schools will be receiving mobile classrooms as an immediate response to the challenges of overcrowding,’ Dlungwana said.
