UPDATE: Schoolyard murder accused denied bail

Accused threatened, second victim recovers

ANGRY community members flocked to the eSikhawini District Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning to hear the fate of murder accused Sphamandla Mngomezulu (19) who applied for bail.

Mngomezulu is charged for brutally stabbing two schoolmates, subsequently killing one, during a break-time attack at Ikhandlela Secondary School in eSikhaleni two weeks ago.

After analysing the nature of the case, the magistrate denied bail.

It was determined his safety might be in jeopardy.

In his plea, Mngomezulu informed the court he wanted to move to a relative in Inkandla and continue with his studies at a different school

Furious residents packed the courtroom and some stood under the hot Zululand sun with the purpose of showing support to the families of the victims.

‘We were happy with the outcome because it was our vision for him not to get bail. Violent people are not supposed to be part of our community,’ said Ward 21 ANC Youth League Chairperson Sbongiseni Masondo.

According to reports, the second victim, who spent more than a week in hospital, returned home.

Sanele Hlatshwayo (18) was discharged from hospital where he was treated for multiple stab wounds.

Meanwhile, angry community members have vowed to commit crimes with the purpose of being arrested and locked up with the accused.

‘People are not happy about what happened. Some want to kill him in jail, just like he stabbed that boy to death.

‘It is wrong, but people are angry and want to do something about this type of crime which seem to be taking over our schools,’ said one resident.

The case was postponed to Friday, 7 April.
