Another U-turn horror crash on N2 near Zinkwazi

A truck crashed into and careered over a Richards Bay registered C200 Mercedes-Benz

A CARPET of mechanical parts were scattered across the N2 near Zinkwazi on Saturday morning after a truck crashed into and careered over a Richards Bay registered C200 Mercedes-Benz, killing the two occupants.

The identities of the victims could not be released at the time of going to print, but it is believed they were resident in Veldenvlei.

According to reports the Mercedes had been driving towards Durban at about 9.30am when the driver attempted to make a U-turn on the highway directly in the path of the oncoming truck carrying cement.

The car’s engine is lodged under the cement truck 60 metres away from the impact site

One of the car’s occupants was trapped in the vehicle, which required Fire and Rescue Services to use the Jaws of Life to free the victim.

Indications are that both occupants died on impact, while the truck driver sustained minor injuries.

KZN Department of Transport spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane, spoke to the ZO not long after the incident.

‘While it is unfortunate that the driver and passenger lost their lives, it appeared to us that the driver was negligent in that he was making a U-turn on a national highway.

‘The MEC has been calling for harsher sentences for drivers who abuse the law in this regard.

Deputy Chairperson of the SA Road Federation, Mike Patterson, was shocked to hear of yet another horrific accident in which locals lost their lives because of a U-turn manoeuvre.

‘To do a U-turn on any road or to cross the line of traffic, especially on a highway, is suicidal. It is almost impossible for a person to estimate the speed of an approaching vehicle.’

• On Friday night three people were killed and one seriously injured after a collision between a truck and an SUV on the R34 near Matshana.
