IFP accused of municipal funds abuse

ANC is in possession of an incriminating letter dated 23 January, addressed to Nongoma Municipality Mayor and the IFP caucus detailing alleged abuse of municipal funds

THE ANC in KZN has issued a statement in which it accuses the IFP of abusing Nongoma Municipal resources for political ends.

The ANC is in possession of an incriminating letter dated 23 January, addressed to Nongoma Municipality Mayor and the IFP caucus detailing alleged abuse of municipal funds for a by-election in Pongola Municipality’s ward 7 in two weeks’ time.

In the letter, the Chairperson of the IFP Election Committee, Cllr EN Buthelezi, requests the IFP-led Nongoma Municipality to provide items, including 500 T-shirts, two jojo tanks, six soccer kits, two sewing machines, barbed wire and food parcels.

The ANC said it regards this as fraud and abuse of taxpayers’ money. It also believes this is a clear demonstration of the IFP’s well known disregard of the suffering of the people of Nongoma, ‘who are trapped in poverty’.

ANC Provincial Secretary Super Zuma said, ‘We call for drastic action against the municipality and the IFP in particular, as there is clear evidence that unsuspecting members of the public living in IFP-led municipalities are being deprived of government services by a self-serving political party.’

The ANC further maintained that these municipalities have been turned into instruments to benefit a few individuals associated with IFP councillors and their families.

The ANC has called upon both the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the Provincial Treasury to launch an investigation.
