Empangeni Child Welfare faces closure

Empangeni Child and Family Care are on the verge of closing their downs due to a lack of funding

EMPANGENI Child and Family Care (ECFC) is on the verge of closing its doors.

The non-profit organisation (NPO) was founded in the early 1980s and has relied on funding from the Department of Social Development (DSD).

‘We get a subsidy from the DSD which contributes to a certain percentage of our staff’s salaries,’ said ECFC Chairperson Mbulelo Makinyane.

But it is not near enough.

Makinyane said they are urgently in need of a financial bailout or they will be left with no option but to close their doors.

‘If we do not get a financial bailout for April, we will have to close down. We simply cannot manage,’ he said.

In a last minute plea for help, Makinyane has appealed to the Zululand community and businesses to assist.

‘We generally believe Zululanders will assist us through this tough time.

‘For years the organisation has received funding from the National Lottery, however they have introduced a new system which has evidently backlogged applications.

‘We have not received any funding from them for the past two years,’ Makinyane told the ZO.

ECFC have put together a short-term financial plan for the next six months in which calculations have shown that the organisation would need an excess of R150 000 to function properly.

Anyone persons willing to assist should phone their offices on 035 7925358 or visit the centre at 3 Jenner Road, Empangeni.
