STINK permeates the air at the eSikhaleni College campus as a water shortage has been plaguing the institution for days.
Students complain that going to class in such conditions has become unbearable.
They say using the toilets is becoming impossible as most have become ‘infested with maggots’ and they don’t have access to drinking water.
They feel college management is not taking the situation seriously.
Umfolozi TVET College spokesperson Bhekani Ndlovu acknowledged the problem caused by the piping system, which he said was the municipality’s responsibility.
‘There is water on campus, but only in some taps. The college maintenance team are attempting to sort out the problem themselves and everything should be up and running again by today (Wednesday).
Commenting on a hospitality students’ protest on Monday causing exam disruptions, Ndlovu said the impasse had been resolved.
‘The delay was caused by the late signing of a check to buy their supplies, which has since been sorted out.’
The Educare students’ protest at the Mandini campus last week and on Monday relating to the recognition of their course, resulted in the students this week meeting with the Ilembe Basic Education District Director, Dr Musa Madondo, who promised to look into the matter.
‘It was clearly stated the qualification is pre-grade 1 only. The department will try and find ways to assist the students by introducing modules which can help upgrade their qualifications later as they begin to work,’ Ndlovu said.
