UPDATE: Policewoman dies in Empangeni horror freak crash

Constable succumbs to her injuries following Friday's horror crash on Empangeni's Main Road

ONE of the victims involved in Friday’s horror crash on Empangeni’s Main Road, succumbed to her injuries late Friday evening.

Constable Nontobeko Manyoni (37) of the Empangeni Family Child and Protection Service (FCS) Unit, suffered multiple trauma injuries, the main one being what paramedics have labelled as a ‘pure head injury.’

On Friday afternoon traffic came to a standstill at the Central Park intersection.

A truck, heading towards Richards Bay, lost control, toppling over and plummeting into Constable Manyoni’s vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Constable Manyoni sustained critical injuries, while a colleague in the car with her and the truck sustained moderate injuries.

All three injured were treated on the scene before being taken to Netcare The Bay Hospital for further treatment.

According to the driver of the truck who spoke to the ZO on Friday, the truck had come back from the mechanic and he suspected that someone may have forgotten to lock the ‘cap fitting,’ which holds down the front cabin of the truck in which the driver is seated.

This is believed to have caused the front end of the truck beginning to nosedive, blinding the truck driver as to what was happening around him.

As he attempted to brake, the truck toppled over, presumably as it was off balance, and plummeted into Constable Manyoni’s vehicle.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdalose expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family members of Constable Manyoni.

‘It is a sad day and a very unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time,’ he said.
