Root cause of sewage stink indentified

Tree discovered to be behind one Empangeni man's driveway drama

AFTER five months of an Empangeni resident crying foul to the city municipality about a sewage leak that turned his driveway into a noxious nightmare, the Water and Sanitation Department found the root cause.

A tree in a neighbour’s yard was at long last identified as the culprit causing damage to a main pipeline, spilling a stream of waste matter to the unfortunate homeowner on Bluebuck Street.

Since the health hazard reared its ugly head on his paving in September, Willie Fourie has had a number of misfortunes.

‘For one, my Labrador thought it was water and got very sick. We had to pay R2 000 for medication to help him get better.

‘I was also concerned about my grandchildren visiting.

‘The situation just went from bad to worse and was moving towards another neigbbour’s property.’

The department managed to unblock the pipeline on Monday evening and gave instructions for the tree to be cut down to avoid growing problems in the neighbourhood.
