Wet weather causes road chaos

uMhlathuze Mayor Mdu Mhlongo has urged motorists to be vigilant on the roads going into this weekend

WHILE the much needed rain is expected to pelt down on Zululand into the weekend, uMhlathuze Mayor Mdu Mhlongo has pleaded with the public to be vigilant and stay safe on the roads.

This follows a spate of accidents over the past two days caused by the wet weather conditions and which stretched emergency services.

One motorist died in a head-on collision this morning on the N2 towards Durban just before the Engen One Stop Petroport.

One person sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Netcare The Bay Hospital.

Shortly after another accident occurred on the same stretch of the N2 in which three vehicles were involved in a pile-up. No one was seriously injured.

Earlier Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) rushed to an accident scene on the N2 towards Mtubatuba in which two people were injured.

On Tuesday morning traffic officers had to divert traffic after a taxi crashed into a vehcile at the John Ross Parkway and R102 intersection.

Four passengers sustained moderate injuries and were taken to Ngwelezana Hospital for treatment.

Further assistance was also needed on the R34 towards Vryheid on Tuesday morning when a taxi lost control, veered off the road and overturned, landing on its roof.

Heavy mist around the Melmoth and Ndundulu areas on the R66 were also reported.

‘Some drivers do not recognise the fact that when the road is wet a driver’s behaviour cannot remain the same,’ Masyor Mhlongo said.

‘It is not easy to see potholes on flooded roads and oil spills make the roads extremely slippery and dangerous.

‘We urge every driver to be cautious and keep to the speed limit,’ Mhlongo said.
