Medway road construction update

Slow progress on crucial John Ross port access intersection

WORK on the R45-million upgrade of Medway Road, linking the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and the eastern gate of the port to the John Ross Parkway, is running behind schedule.

Project engineer Rob Cowan gave a progress report on Tuesday:

• The layer works on the NE/SE quadrants of the John Ross/Medway Road intersection are running slightly behind on programme and are expected to be complete by the end of April.

• The layer works on the Medway Road south bound carriageway (new carriageway to Port) is expected to be complete by the end of April.

• Traffic will be diverted early in May from the old carriage way (north bound carriageway – existing road to Port) to the new carriageway so that the existing road can be reconstructed. Expected completion is at the end of August.

• The culvert construction is currently behind owing to de-watering and other challenges. Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.

• In May work will commence on the NW/SW quadrants of the John Ross/ Medway Road intersection which is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Layer works at the John Ross/Medway Road intersection are at an advanced stage
