Man shoots friend at workplace

Shooter arrested, motive for attack unknown

THE man responsible for shooting an eShowe stationery shop worker was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

Govindamah ‘Cheryl’ Gounden (43) was at her workplace when a male friend entered the store at 3pm on Monday.

He fired two shots at point blank range, hitting Cheryl in the neck and stomach area, with one bullet piercing her right hand.

The shooter fled the scene in his vehicle, which was recovered near Eshlazi Dam.

Gounden was taken to Ngwelezana Hospital where she underwent a six hour operation.

On Tuesday afternoon she was recovering in ICU and her condition was described as ‘extremely critical’.

A case of attempted murder was opened at the eShowe SAPS.

On Tuesday at around 2.30pm, the eShowe Community Police Forum (CPF) Deputy Chairperson Stan Larkan received a telephone call from a community member saying the suspect was thought to be at a residence in Havelock Street in eShowe.

He went to the house and contacted the police, who entered the premises and found the man in possession of an automatic pistol and arrested him.

The suspect was scheduled to appear in court this morning (Thursday).
