25 school children injured in taxi crash

Medics have treated more than 20 children following a crash near Mandeni

Twenty-five schoolchildren were injured this morning after the driver of their transport bus lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a taxi.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the driver of a Hyundai H100 transporting the children lost control resulting in a rear-end collision with an empty taxi, which in turn hit a car.

The vehicle was heading towards Mandeni from Sundumbili on the P459.

‘A total of 25 children were treated and transported to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue and KZN EMS,’ Herbst said.

‘One learner was trapped in the front of the Hyundai and Rural Metro Fire and Rescue extricated the child under the watchful eye of IPSS Advanced Life Support medics,’ he said.

‘The injuries ranged from minor, to moderate and serious on the one entrapped child. The driver was also injured.’

‘Unfortunately we cannot release the name of the school at present,’ Herbst concluded.
