State of the Nation address tonight

President Jacob Zuma will deliver his fourth State of the Nation address tonight

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma will tonight (Thursday) deliver his fourth State of the Nation address before a joint sitting of Parliament in Cape Town.

His address is set to start at 7pm and will be broadcast live on several radio and TV stations.

Live streams will also be available on YouTube and news websites such as eNCA and SABC.

Following the speech, the National Assembly will debate certain points and Zuma will then respond to the debate.

Controversy erupted on Tuesday afternoon when the presidency confirmed it would be drafting in 441 South African National Defence Force soldiers to assist with ‘law and order activities’.

The soldiers have been stationed there between since Sunday.

Opposition parties, civil rights organisations and political heavyweights have called the security measures ‘unprecedented’ and concerns were raised over rumours of limitations on the movements of journalists.

Zuma’s speech is expected to focus strongly on the economy and slow growth, which has exacerbated problems linked to inequality and unemployment.

Earlier on Tuesday, Zuma rubbished reports he was preparing for a cabinet reshuffle immediately after SONA.
