THE mayor of uMlalazi Municipality made good on his promise in October, when he awarded 103 registration bursaries, top 30 certificates and five laptop computers to the district’s top learners.
Cllr Thelumoya Zulu made the undertaking while motivating 2016 matriculants during their examination prayer ceremony last year.
Siphoso High School learner Mthokozisi Mncwango achieved 99% in physical science, 95% in mathematics and over 90% in all other subjects.
This put her in first position in uMlalazi and second place in the King Cetshwayo District Municipality.
She has registered for medicine at University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The mayor shared his own humble background, saying his father struggled to pay his tuition fees from his R275 monthly salary.
‘Through democracy and the government, which strongly believes in education, things have changed for the better and students are recognised yearly for their hard work, which confirms that South Africa is moving forward.
‘While at your different universities, do not forget your humble backgrounds and the communities that raised you.
‘Come back and develop your municipality with your hard-earned skills to strengthen the next generation.’
Aubzin Zungu, secretary of the uMlalazi Youth Council, told the high school graduates that they should not fail their families because of the new challenges they will find at universities.
They must always remember their purpose and be motivated by their upbringing.
