THREE fishermen put a frantic call through to Empangeni SAPS this morning after they noticed a body floating in the Nseleni River – just as they were about to cast their lines.
Empangeni Search and Rescue divers, Warrant Officers Waldo Herbst and Nico Gouws, were dispatched to the scene near the N2 bridge where they recovered the badly decomposed and mutilated remains of an unidentified male.
The head and one arm could not be found.
Early estimation puts the body in the water for a little more than three days, with the considerable damage attributed to the large local crocodile population.
On the bank of the river, not far from where the fishermen first spotted the body, a pair of shoes lay discarded, leading investigators to believe he may have been fishing and fell in.
Police will now compare missing person reports and interview local residents in eNseleni in an attempt to ascertain the identity of the man.
