Breakthrough in Unizulu student robbery cases

Mtunzini police have made a breakthrough on a syndicate terrorising University of Zululand students at their cottages

THE Mtunzini police have made a breakthrough on a syndicate terrorising University of Zululand students at their cottages in KwaDlangezwa area.

After a spate of house robberies in the area, police conducted an intelligence-driven operation in the early hours of Thursday morning where they arrested five suspects believed to be linked to a number of break-ins.

They were found in possession of suspected stolen goods such as TV sets, laptops, clothing, cellphones and two unlicensed pistols believed to be used during robberies.

The suspects will appear in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court today (Monday) facing house robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition charges.

Investigation continues and more charges could be added.

It is reported on 23 January at about 11pm four victims were in their cottage at KwaDlangezwa area when the suspects came in, armed with firearms.

It is alleged on entering the room; they demanded cash as well as other items from the victims. Cell phones, cash and other items were taken and the suspects then fled on foot.

A case of house robbery was opened at Mtunzini Police Station.

KZN Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the members for the outstanding work they did in arresting the suspects.

‘Our detectives will work around the clock in establishing whether these suspects are linked to other house robberies in the area.

‘We have experienced a number of house robberies in KwaDlangezwa area, where students’ cottages were targeted.

‘The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used to commit other crimes in the province,’ Langa added.
