Snare is caring for rural girls

Young mother supports young rural girls

BAY businesswoman, musician and young mother Sinenhlanhla ‘Snare’ Zikalala (28) is making a difference in the lives of young girls.

Sinenhlanhla of Snare Entertainment and Productions is spearheading the Zululand’s Caring4Girls programme, with hope to support young girls with sanitary wear.

In a joint venture with the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre, Sinenhlanhla wants to tackle the plight of impoverished girls who often miss school during their menstrual cycles owing to the lack of sanitary wear.

‘The aim of the Caring4Girls programme is to ensure access this necessity so girls may stay in school, and therefore ensure the development and growth of young South African women with dignity.

‘We want bring social change through providing support to poor rural communities. Education is important and we can’t have young girls missing school,’ said Sinenhlanhla.

Research revealed most impoverished girls miss up to 50 days of school annually owing to menstrual hygiene-related challenges.

‘Some of the girls end up using unhygienic materials such as cloths, newspaper, grass and plastic as alternatives. We need to change that and empower them so they can focus on their education.’

The national Caring4Girls programme was established in 2012, and has since touched the lives of over 50 000 girls in the South African provinces of KZN, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

More than 300 000 packets of sanitary towels have been distributed to girls throughout the country.
