HAVING committed her life to establishing various community development projects and serving others, Mzingazi community worker Sharon Mdletshe is now planning to erect a place of safety for abused women.

Utilising a piece of land on her property, which has a beautiful view overlooking the Lake Mzingazi, Mdletshe is appealing to local businesses, corporates and individuals to help build the shelter for abused women and their young children.

Being involved in the Community Policing Forum (CPF) for 17 years and working at the Richards Bay SAPS Trauma Room for over a decade, Mdletshe has had first hand experience dealing with people affected by trauma, abuse and violence.

‘Personally I have also been a victim of crime and abuse and have helped many others work through their problems and challenges.

‘I believe God always educates and empowers a person for where they are going and I know my experiences were not in vain.

‘Having worked with the police for many years, I have empathy for them when they have witnesses who come to court but have no overnight facility where they can stay.

‘Sometimes the court cases are not finalised and witnesses have to travel back home and return the following day, if we could accommodate them this will save time for our officers.

‘I want to build this facility to help women get back on their feet, work through their problems while being in a safe place.

‘I might not have a degree or qualification in social work, but I have life experiences, a passion and a love to help and serve those in need.

‘All my life I have served others and given of my time to help develop my community, now I would like to establish this centre.’

Counselling

Offering counselling services at the Richards Bay SAPS Trauma Centre, Mdletshe also extends her services to her community and the surrounding areas.

‘I believe all these years of working in the community have prepared me to take on this task and there is no crime I have not seen so I have been prepared to deal with any case.

‘My life has been dedicated to helping others and I still continue with the food parcels projects as well.

‘I have worked with many non profit organisations and was instrumental in the start up of numerous projects and developments in Mzingazi.

‘I am inviting locals to come on board and assist me with this project, they can call or text me on 083 8723384.’
