Leading local pharmacist mourned

Tribute to Martin Lombard

Paul Rossouw

MARTIN Johannes Lombard (76) sadly passed away on Monday, 16 January at the Bay Hospital in Richards Bay.

Born and raised in Cradock, Martin attended Paarl Boys High where he excelled in rugby and ultimately played for the under 19A team.

After completing matric he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch, studying geology.

Here he met his sweetheart and lifelong companion Maretha.

His interests and ambition resulted in him changing his course and he enrolled at the University of Potchefstroom and studied pharmacy and ultimately graduated with a BScPharm degree.

He married Maretha (Besselaar) on 4 February 1967 and they settled in Allanridge, a small mining community in the Free State.

In 1974 they relocated to Richards Bay where he established his pharmacy business, which at the height of his career consisted of five pharmacies in Richards Bay, Meerensee and Empangeni.

Martin, who retired in 2014, was well known not only in Richards Bay, but throughout pharmaceutical circles across South Africa for his abundant knowledge of the field and business acumen.

Both his sons followed in their father’s footsteps and became pharmacists and businessmen.

He dedicated his whole life to the well-being of Zululand as well as his family.

Martin was a man of great integrity, honesty and unwavering faith and love for his God and his family.

He leaves a huge legacy behind and will be remembered always.

He is survived by his wife Maretha, sister Hendricia, children Pierre, Johan, Michelle and Lisette, as well as three grandchildren, Chanel, Chané and Aneska.

The funeral will take place at 3pm tomorrow (Friday) at the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk) in Meerensee.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all the love and support from our community and all corners of the globe.

May he rest in peace.
