Learner programme for rural matrics a big success

RBM recognises that good education forms the foundation of a prosperous and well-balanced society

TOP matrics in Richards Bay Minerals’ four host communities – Sokhulu, KwaMbonambi, Mkhwanazi and Dube – on Monday thanked the Bambisanani Programme for their distinctions in maths and science.

The programme, run in partnership between RBM, Grantleigh Schools and the Department of Basic Education, focuses on providing extra classes and offering career guidance during the three-year study period.

‘We are very encouraged by the positive attitude of our schools towards the programme and we know that schools work very hard to improve the quality of education for all the learners in their care,’ said RBM Acting General Manager of Communities and Corporate Relations, Moses Thokwane.

‘Learners attended classes in the afternoons in the Titanium Learning Centre at Grantleigh.
‘The results of the programme have been excellent with a dramatic increase in pass rates, and some students excelling with distinctions in various subjects.

‘The success in achieving its objectives makes it an ideal model to be replicated in other regions of South Africa,’ Thokwane said.

‘RBM recognises that good education forms the foundation of a prosperous and well-balanced society and its deep and broad investment in educational development has a long and proud history.’

Great gratitude

Sabathile Dube from Ntongande School in KwaMbonambi, who earned eight distinctions and will study medicine at the University of KZN, expressed her appreciation.

‘The teachers went out of their way to make sure we always understood each lesson.

‘I also learnt through the programme that through hard work, discipline and support from teachers, we can achieve great results.’

Vuyo Nxumalo from Dlem Dlem High School in Sokhulu, who achieved six distinctions and has his eye set on studying pharmacy, said making the daily sacrifices to attend extra classes made him realise that he has what it takes to succeed.

Muzi Khona Dube from Ndesheni High School in Dube, who boasts four distinctions, said, ‘Every day I looked forward to going to these extra classes. The teachers made it very interesting and they supported us from start to finish.

‘I hope other students who get this chance will work hard and realise the benefit of this programme.’
