Back to school safety tips

ADT Security KZN District Manager Ivan Govender said four simple rules could save a child’s life

NOW that little Zululanders are back at school, security agencies are warning parents to prepare their children on how to stay out of harm’s way.

ADT Security KZN District Manager Ivan Govender said four simple rules could save a child’s life.

‘They should always walk to or from school with a friend or friends and stick to streets they know – never take shortcuts through quiet areas or empty parking lots.

‘If they are getting picked up at school, they should never leave the school premises, but always wait inside the school grounds until the lift arrives.

‘They must never get into a stranger’s car, even if the stranger claims that someone they love is hurt and the driver was asked to pick them up.

‘If a stranger approaches them, they must not talk to them no matter how friendly they seem.

‘And if a stranger tries to grab them, they must fight, kick and scream that the person is not their parent.’

Govender added that in cases where children have to keep themselves occupied at home until a parent returns home, it is important that they know how the alarm system and panic buttons work, and when to use them.

‘Also make a list of important telephone numbers, such as emergency services and parents’ work and cell phone numbers.

‘Stick these on or near the telephone and explain when the numbers should be used.

‘Emphasise how important it is not to let anyone into the house without permission.

‘If a parent is running late, let the children know as soon as possible and give them an idea of when they can expect a guardian home.

‘Lastly, if the children are quite young, make sure that they understand that certain items in the house are dangerous and are off limits such as the stove, kettle, heaters and candles.’
