Steady studying wins the race

Bay schools matric pupils shine.

RICHARDS Bay Secondary School pupil Maria Kaptwa, who scored seven distinctions, has firmly placed the Brackenham-based school back on the map with honours.

The introvert teenager earned an 84% average with A’s in English, iSizulu, maths, life orientation, geography, life sciences and physical sciences.

Disciplined in her studies, Maria maintained excellent results throughout the year and is planning to study Actuarial Sciences.

According to Deputy Principal L Kanniah, who was at school on Thursday distributing statements, the matrics have produced excellent results.

‘The school’s pass rate has improved to 69.1% and many achieved distinctions; we are extremely proud of our top achievers, Maria as well as Leeland Aunguna who achieved five distinctions.

‘Last year, the school introduced several interventions to help improve matric pupils’ marks: weekend and holiday classes as well as events for the top 30 achievers.

‘With Maria, her father was always in attendance at meetings and events and availed his time if there was a need.

‘We are encouraging all our parents to take an active part in their children’s schooling and work together with the school management and staff,’ she said.

Consistent

Meanwhile for BirdsView Academy top achiever Sameran Naidoo, consistency throughout the year was his key factor to scoring five distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting, Engineering Graphics and Design and Life Orientation.

Having missed a A in English by one mark, Sameran plans to have the paper remarked in the hope of bagging another distinction.

‘I am still in shock, I was expecting three distinctions only and I am so ecstatic with the extras.

‘I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of my parents and extended family.

‘My message to the 2017 matrics is to do your best and believe in yourself because practice and hard work pays off.

‘With accounting I struggled during the year and felt I was just not clicking with the subject, but with consistent practice my marks improved remarkably.’
