Police operations control festive crime wave

Police roadblocks had a positive effect in curbing crime activities during the festive season.

INTENSIFIED police presence at crime hot-spots and in urban shopping areas assisted in curtailing crime during the festive season in Zululand.

According to police reports, regular roadblocks, crime squad patrols and stop -search operations had a positive effect in curbing the crime wave which generally engulfs the region during the spending season.

Police said these operations yielded good results with several illegal items confiscated and perpetrators locked behind bars.

‘The visibility of police officials definitely controlled crime in the area and figures are down compared to other previous years.

‘Apart from a couple of business and house break-ins, we had a peaceful holiday season,’ said Empangeni SAPS Cluster spokesperson, Capt Mbongeni Mdlalose.

He said police made several arrests in connection with break-ins and investigations are proceeding.

Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson Capt Sbusiso Guma, also declared that crime levels were reduced, and praised the police for their dedication in ensuring safety for all citizens.

‘Police members were deployed all over the area, and criminals had no chance to engage in unlawful activities.

Roadblocks were set up in all major entry and exit points of our towns, resulting in several arrests,’ he said.

‘Those arrested were mainly involved in assault cases, with alcohol abuse the main source of all these incidents,’

According to Guma, police targeted illegal substances, firearms and signs of human trafficking.

‘We plan to do the same for the rest of the year, not just during Christmas time. The safety of our people is important and we aim to ensure we fight crime at all costs and at all levels,’ said Guma.

In eSikhaleni, crime activities were also reported to have been reduced during the festive.

According to spokesperson Capt Thembinkosi Mkhumane of eSikhawini SAPS, no major incidents were reported during the jovial period.
