Murder most vile

His badly decomposed body was only discovered on Christmas Day.

ALMOST five years to the day of the passing of his loving wife Magriet, 81-year-old Boet Smuts was attacked and died in his David Glenny Crescent home in Empangeni.

His badly decomposed body was only discovered on Christmas Day by a concerned neighbour, while it is believed the attack occurred on Thursday or Friday of that week.

Magriet passed away on 22 December 2011 and if initial police reports are correct, he might have died on the anniversary of her death.

But why Boet, who ran a small metal works business from his home to occupy his time in retirement, was attacked, remains a mystery.

On the driveway, his small bakkie stands jacked up with one wheel removed, the tools still laid out on the paving next to the car.

Family members have confirmed the house was ransacked, but only a cell phone and a wallet were taken.

Police are trying to piece together the events that led to his death.

The family has requested another autopsy be done after the Medical Examiner found he died of a heart attack, possibly as a result of injuries sustained during the attack.

While police sources close to the investigation could not confirm more details at this time, the ZO can report the case is still being considered a murder.

The grieving family did not wish to be drawn into speculation or further comment but were confident that police investigations would ensure swift results.

A memorial service will be held at the Empangeni Country Club on Thursday (5 January) at 11am.
