Councillor arrested for stock theft

He was arrested in Vryheid with 15 head of cattle stolen.

AN Mtonjaneni ward councillor has been arrested after having being found in the possession of stolen cattle on Thursday.

He was arrested in Vryheid with 15 head of cattle stolen from the Piet Retief area.

The IFP is demanding that the ANC take appropriate action against the councillor.

IFP spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison, Blessed Gwala says, ‘It is unacceptable that a public representative who people trusted and voted for has now betrayed their trust by engaging in such criminal activity.

‘Crime committed by any citizen is bad enough, but it is even worse when done by a ward councillor as people will find it difficult to trust their public representatives, who should be above reproach and earn the trust of the communities in which they work.

Stock theft is an on-going problem in KZN and it has caused friction within communities.

Gwala commended the swift action by police in arresting this councillor and recovering the cattle.
