ANC councillor, IFP leader gunned down

'The attacker asked Khumalo's younger child to tell him to step outside the house, so they could talk'

THE ANC in KZN has expressed its sadness at the brutal assassination of its Ward 7 Councillor in uPhongolo Local Municipality.

Cllr Mbhekiseni ‘Pat’ Khumalo (56), was murdered by an unknown attacker who came in his homestead at Kwalubisi village under the pretext of seeking help from him.

ANC Provincial Secretary Super Zuma has condemned the attack, saying details regarding the murder remained sketchy.

‘We are concerned about the systematic killings directed at our councillors, which seem part of a well-orchestrated plan.

‘It appears that the attacker asked Khumalo’s younger child to tell him to step outside the house, so they could talk.

‘He was then shot several times, we are told,’ said Zuma.

He said his party was disturbed that all assassins who attack public representatives were still walking freely.

‘This continuous killings of public representatives have a potential to create instability and make other councillors unable to discharge their duties to service communities.

‘We have not lost hope in our law enforcement agencies. We believe they will finally bring these killers to book.

‘For now, as the ANC we would not like to speculate about the motive behind this heinous crime.

‘We urge our communities to assist the police with whatever information that can lead to the arrest of the masterminds behind the killings of our Councillors.

‘We have full confidence that the Commission of Enquiry to investigate politically-motivated violence in the province will shed some light with the people, as to why public representatives continue to be targeted,’ added Zuma.

Meanwhile the IFP in King Cetshwayo District has also expressed it shock at the murder of Simosakhe Ndlovu of Mambuka Reserve.

Ndlovu (37) was the Mambuka Branch Chairperson of the IFP and a Ward Committee Member for Ward 33.

According to the IFP’s District Media Liaison Officer, Xolani Ngwezi, Ndlovu was shot and killed by unknown gunmen, while returning home from doing community work on Sunday night.

‘What worries us most about this untimely death, is that Ndlovu was a pillar and an engine of the IFP in Mambuka and Ntambanana as a whole.

He contributed immensely towards the IFP winning Ward 33 in the City of uMhlathuze. We would be happy if the perpetrators of this crime would have been brought to book by the time we lay him to rest, that is our wish,’ said Ngwezi who is also a Member of the IFP National Council.
