UPDATE: Police recover body at Nzalabantu

Search efforts will continue for the remaining victim

EMPANGENI SAPS Search and Rescue divers over the weekend recovered one body following two drownings on Wednesday at Nzalabantu beach near RBM.

With the assistance of an SAPS helicopter, the body was spotted and recovered on Saturday. The other victim remains missing.

According to a statement issued by the NSRI, the Richards Bay Station received a call about two men who had been missing for an hour after a swimming accident on Wednesday afternoon.

‘It appears that while playing soccer two men had gone into the surf to retrieve their ball and were both swept away by strong rip currents,’ said spokesman for the NSRI, Craig Lambinon.

‘One man went into the surf to try to assist the men being swept away and he managed to rescue one of them,’ he continued.

‘He then reportedly went back into the surf to try to rescue the remaining man but despite reaching the casualty both men were then swept away and disappeared.’

Search efforts will continue for the remaining victim.
