Road carnage over first holiday weekend

Dozens injured as road accidents peak over weekend

GREATER Zululand saw scenes of utter road carnage on Friday night, as payday coincided with a public holiday and the first holiday weekend of the festive season dawned.

Between 6 and 7pm at least five accidents were simultaneously reported, pushing emergency services to extreme lengths to cater for the sudden influx of patients.

A bakkie carrying a number of passengers on the back overturned on a gravel road running through a farm in rural Mtunzini, near Forest Inn.

Sadly a small child, believed to be six years old, died at the scene.

Seven other people were injured and taken to hospital for further treatment.

A further ten people were injured at Nkwaleni at the R33/R66 intersection at around 11pm.

Other accidents around Zululand accounted for at least 15 more patients.

Two people died and a further three were injured when two cars collided on the R34 at the Dlangubo turn-off on Saturday morning.

On the N2 near Maphosa four people were injured also on Saturday morning, however details surrounding the incident were unclear at the time of going to print.

Motorists are urged to drive with care as a large number of intoxicated motorists are defying law enforcement and taking to the streets.
