Police comb Nzalabantu beach for two drowning victims

Police divers suspended the search after dark and are on scene again now

EMPANGENI Search and Rescue divers are this morning continuing to search for the bodies of two teenagers reported to have drowned late yesterday at Nzalabantu Beach near RBM.

This after the tragic drowning of a nine-year-old boy at a small dam in KwaMsane on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the National Sea Rescue Institute, the Richards Bay Station received a call about two men who had been missing for an hour after a swimming accident.

‘It appears that while playing soccer two men had gone into the surf to retrieve their ball and were both swept away by strong rip currents,’ said spokesman for the NSRI, Craig Lambinon.

‘One man went into the surf to try to assist the men being swept away and he managed to rescue one of them,’ he continued.

‘He then reportedly went back into the surf to try to rescue the remaining man but despite reaching the casualty both men were then swept away and disappeared.’

Police divers suspended the search after dark and are on scene again now.
