Empangeni rapist gets life term

A 29-year-old Empangeni rapist was handed down a life sentence for the rape of an 11 year old girl

THE Mtunzini Regional Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Ganyana Mpanza (29) to life imprisonment for rape.

According to KZN SAPS, on 13 April 2013, an 11-year-old victim was raped by the accused after he called her to come and stay with her girlfriend since he was going somewhere.

The victim did as she was instructed since they were neighbours.

The accused asked her to enter inside the room and raped her.

A case of rape was opened at Mtunzini Police Station and the docket was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation, which led to the arrest of the accused on 29 February 2016.

The accused made several court appearances before he was convicted and sentenced.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the heavy sentence handed to the accused.

‘This sentence will send a strong message to other criminals who are abusing our community.

‘We will continue to arrest and sentence those who are raping our kids instead of protecting them,’ he said.
