UPDATE: Guard ‘executed’ during cash heist

A case of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances is being investigated

A RICHARDS BAY G4S security guard was brutally killed during a Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery on Monday morning.

The guard was transferring cash from the security vehicle into an ATM inside the south-bound Engen 1-Stop just outside Empangeni when a crew of at least six men, all armed with handguns, struck just after 8am.

According to Empangeni SAPS spokesman Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the 31-year-old was shot at least twice in the head and chest, at close range.

He confirmed that the guard had not opened fire on the suspects but had complied with their instructions and was laying on the ground when shot.

‘A case of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances is being investigated by Richards Bay Organised Crime detectives,’ Mdlalose said on Monday.
